Vida Li Sik • March 20, 2023

Sermon summary:

We are stronger together when we respect each other; trust one another's motives; pray together, and more.

Paul wrote to the Ephesians to encourage them. In the book of Revelation, they were commended for working hard to keep unity; they were patient, endured hardship, and didn't tolerant false teaching. But they became lukewarm.

Paul wrote a letter to encourage them. In Ephesians 1, Paul's prayer is for them to be have inner strength through his Spirit. He prayed for them to develop deep roots so they don't get shaken easily. We need to do the same. To understand how deep God's love is for us. Once we understand, then we are able to put into practice, Ephesians 4:1–6.

Make allowances for each other's faults. We will hurt each other, and make mistakes, instead of fighting. Your kids & spouse & leadership & even yourself.

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit.

Get God's grace. Titus was appointed by the Apostle Paul to minister to a Gentile audience. God's grace gives us salvation and teaches us to say no to ungodliness. God poured out his grace on us. Learn to control your character. Grace and conduct go together. Can you control (press the pause or stop button) yourself?

We are stronger together when we remember who we are. We have family values as part of God's household. We are stronger together when we know who we are and why we are here. We are to represent God's goodness in the world. Our mission unifies us. We are stronger together when we have clear family values. We need to be a praying community, and leadership should be based on having a godly character, not on looks or charisma.

Surprised by hope. We are able to offer hope to others even when we face challenges. Do we see trouble in life as opportunities to advance the gospel? Being united with Christ means we must be unified with others. We are called to look after the interests of others. We need to have humility in all areas of our lives. Press on towards the goal. How much energy do you spend looking at the past instead of straining towards the future and what's ahead. You cannot look behind you when you plough. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.

Jesus is king. He is all we ever needed but not all we wanted. He rescued us out of darkness into his kingdom (church). Jesus built his church, it was created through and for him. The church becomes weak when it loses connection with the head (Jesus). Don't move from the hope you have in Christ.

We are called to excel in the grace of giving—it’s not just a duty, but a spiritual act of worship. Be consistent and faithful in our giving. Set it aside intentionally, and don’t delay in fulfilling what you’ve committed to the Lord. Don't let your imperfect view of God impact your giving.

Changing takes courage—but parenting God’s way means choosing His path, and knowing where our help comes from. Righteousness is about healing and strengthening relationships, not achieving perfection. Don’t conform to the world’s ways—seek God’s perspective on parenting. Model the behaviour you want to see, and let His Word draw your heart to your children, and theirs to yours. Be present in their spiritual journey—it's not optional, it's your responsibility.

We are like broken pieces of pottery. God went looking for us, he found the fragments of our lives discarded by life/shame/disappointment, and put us back with the blood of Jesus. Treat each other not as broken but perfected through Christ.
