Jesus the Teacher, Part 1 - by Jake Graham

Sermon recap:

Jesus was both a learner and a teacher of Scripture. From a young age, He immersed himself in God’s Word, as seen in The Gospel of Luke, Luke 2:41–52, where twelve-year-old Jesus sat among the teachers, listening and learning.

His wisdom and ministry were shaped through years of intimacy with God and deep knowledge of Scripture. In The Gospel of John, John 5:19 and 8:28, Jesus explained that he learned by imitating the Father, and during his temptation in Luke 4:1–13, he responded to every challenge with Scripture.

The sermon highlighted the 18 hidden years Jesus spent preparing for ministry through prayer, obedience, and a relationship with God. After fasting and prayer, Luke 4:14–21 shows Jesus stepping into his calling with clarity and purpose rooted in Scripture. In Luke 24:44, Jesus taught that the entire Hebrew Bible points to him through the Torah (Law), Nevi’im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings). Jesus knew the Bible because he built his life on it, challenging believers to examine how deeply they know and live by God’s Word.

Jake also explained how the Bible came together: 66 books written over 1,500 years across three continents, and it is both divine and human. In the book of Exodus (Exodus 17 and 24), God instructed Moses to write things down as a remembrance and covenant relationship. The example of the Book of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 36) showed Jeremiah faithfully recording God’s words over 23 years, even rewriting the scroll after it was destroyed by King Jehoiakim.

The sermon ended with a challenge to prioritise Scripture over distractions like phones and busyness. Spending even 30 minutes a day in the Bible could lead to reading it several times in a year. Jesus’ life reminds believers that spiritual depth, strength, and purpose are built through consistent time with God and his Word.
